A New Interface for Google Search Results Pages

The latest design refresh updated not only Google's homepage, but also search results pages. Google uses a new color scheme for the sidebar, adds grayscale icons next to the specialized search engines, replaces the standard search button with a label-less blue button, uses a smaller Google logo and adds a gray background color to the header.

Google says it has "muted the color of the tools and reserved the use of bolder colors to highlight key action buttons, tools and filters". Unfortunately, the change made the sidebar icons less useful and the search box too prominent. The new header could pave the way to a search results page that uses "infinite scrolling" instead of pagination.

Here's the old interface:

Can you find other changes?

Google Calendar's Design Refresh

After Google Search and Google Maps, it's time for Google Calendar to switch to a Google+ interface. The new design is a lot cleaner, even if no important feature was removed. "Quick add" is now available if you click the arrow next to the "Create button" (not very intuitive), "Print" and "Refresh" are now buttons instead of links, the month view below the "Create" button can be collapsed, "Save" and "Discard" buttons are only displayed at the top of the page.

"Right now, the changes are just cosmetic and have not affected the way Calendar works. You can choose to turn off the new look by clicking the gear icon and choosingUse the classic look (you can turn it back on by going to the gear icon and choosing Try the new look)," explains Google. Obviously, at some point, Google Calendar will integrate with Google+ and we'll see even more changes.

the ONLY people who can’t access Google+ are Google Apps user.. many of whom pay | Frustrating

If you’re a Google Apps for Business user, you’ve undoubtedly been frustrated by the release of Google+. The product, still very much in private beta, isn’t available to you guys yet. I’m a paying Google Apps user myself and understand the frustration.

In fact in my eagerness to use Google+ on a daily basis, I made the switch and have literally moved all my email from my paid-for Google Apps account to a standard free Gmail account. Yes, I’ve gone from paying to not paying just to use one of Google’s products.

What’s even more frustrating is that anyone with an email address can get access to Google+, you don’t need a @gmail.com address. Signing up with a ymail.com, hotmail.com or other enterprise email address is perfectly fine unless you’re already using that address with Google Apps for Business.

Simply put, the only people who aren’t able to access Google’s new social project are people signed up to Google Apps, many of whom pay.

You can understand why there’s a little animosity.

Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product Management at Google, explains above that the company was aware of the problem and that it will be addressed soon BUT this isn’t the first time Google Apps users have been left behind. Most recently, the roll out of Google’s new design across its various apps has seen Google Apps users once again wondering why they’re being discounted.

There is an argument that Google Apps users, many of whom are large businesses, need to prepared in advance for releases such as Google+. Releases that could potentially complicate their working environment. Irrespective, I’m sure an option for customers who want access to new or pre-release features wouldn’t go amiss

From my experience, the reality is this; many of the users complaining that they haven’t got access to Google+ aren’t businesses but rather individuals who – in their eagerness to use a custom domain with Google’s products – signed up for Google Apps for your Business.

An ideal solution would be for Google to provide a new simple offering for individuals who want to use Google Apps with their own domain and are willing to pay for it – let’s call it Google Premier. Sit this new package neatly between standard Gmail accounts and Google Apps for Business. Users of Google Premier can then choose whether or not they receive priority access to Google’s new products and features. Devoted users are happy, it should provide great feedback and it’s potentially a lucrative source of revenue.

What do you think?

In the mean time current Google Apps users will either have to sit tight or make the switch to a standard gmail account and add your custom email address as an alternative to send from. Not sure how? Instructions here.

Gmail’s got a beautiful new look and you can try it NOW

Only minutes after we posted user mockups of what a redesigned Gmail might look like, Google has released a preview of what the real new Gmail will look like, including themes that you can test out today.

It’s eerie how accurate the earlier mockups were. These screenshots show a Gmail that has adopted the Google+ minimalist, orange and gray aesthetic, though it’s not an identical aesthetic — the buttons for instance are larger.

Simply go to Gmail Settings, click over to the Themes tab and select “Preview” or “Preview (Dense)” as your theme to try this yourself. Google has provided two themes because the end result is an elastic responsive design that shifts its information density to accomodate your screen size, but for now, you need to pick based on the density you prefer.

The Preview theme, which spreads information out over more space and so must be the theme designed for larger screens, spreads things out a little too much. The eye doesn’t naturally scan over emails in the inbox because the whitespace between each message is a little too big for information that is provided in only one-line increments. The spacing works for Google+ because the items are generally a paragraph or more in length.

If you flick over the Preview (Dense) you get something that’s akin to the current layout with a new skin on it, and it works. It’s still easy to scan through your inbox and pleasant to both look at and use. The only complaint I have is that the advertisements seem more prominent than before — but I’m sure ad blindness will kick in soon enough!

I’m hearing some reports that there are little spacing issues with either theme on particularly small screens, and some strangeness occurring when the window is resized from very small to wider.

Of course, this is a preview, and it’s “step one of a monster series of upgrades over the next few months” according to Jason Cornwell, who is a Googler working on the project.

After the limited launch of Google+ and updates to the designs of other Google products, Gmail had started to look rather dated (heck, I’d thought so before the new Google look started popping up), so this is a welcome development — one I’ll be adopting today.

Missouri River releases step up ahead of rains

HAMBURG, Iowa (Reuters) – Federal officials increased water releases from two South Dakota dams on Saturday to make room for expected potentially heavy rains through early next week, adding to flooding woes along the Missouri River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water releases from five dams in North Dakota and South Dakota had already about doubled prior records to relieve reservoirs swollen by heavy winter snows and spring rainfall at the river's Montana headwaters.

With severe storms expected over the next four or five days that could dump up to 4 inches of rain in some areas, the Corps has started to increase flows by nearly 7 percent at the Oahe Dam above Pierre, South Dakota's capital, and the Big Bend Dam just downstream.

"It's going to be a widespread heavy rainfall event and obviously will have a big impact on the Missouri River Valley for the next four or five days," said Bruce Terry, a senior National Weather Service forecaster.

Terry said extensive rains of more than 1 inch are forecast from eastern Montana through southern North Dakota, all of South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4-plus inches could be rather widespread for much of South Dakota and western Nebraska, he said.

Corps officials warned residents to ensure they were ready to pump stormwater out of the cities, over the levees and back into the river after the heavy rains.

The increased releases had South Dakota officials concerned about the strain on levees in Pierre and Fort Pierre nearby.

"The state is working with the Corps to ascertain the impact this will have, so that we can ensure the levees remain effective," South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard said.

"I am also very concerned about the effect this will have on private levees that were built relying on Corps information."

WEEKEND RELEASES

The Corps plans to release 155,000 cubic feet per second from the Oahe and Big Bend dams on Saturday and 160,000 on Sunday, up from the roughly 150,000 it has been releasing.

It said about half the available capacity at Fort Randall would be taken up if the Oahe and Big Bend releases continued at the stepped up pace through mid-July and it has no immediate plans to increase releases from Gavins Point Dam.

Gavins Point is closely watched because the river flows freely from there for more than 800 miles straddling Iowa and Nebraska and through Missouri to the Mississippi River.

"We are on a razor's edge here and the rain will drive the releases," said Colonel Robert Ruch, the Corps' Omaha District commander.

Downstream from Gavins Point in affluent Dakota Dunes, contractors stockpiled materials to be ready if temporary levees there sustain another partial collapse. On Thursday, a partial collapse was discovered and repaired in Dakota Dunes.

The swollen Missouri River has flooded areas from Montana through Missouri, forcing residents to shore up protections and raise temporary levees around towns. Thousands of people have evacuated homes along the river, and more may need to go.

A levee breached at Hamburg, Iowa, on Monday where about one-quarter of the town's 1,200 residents were under mandatory evacuation. A secondary levee was raised to protect the city.

The hectic scramble to protect Hamburg gave way to quiet confidence on Saturday. Where dozens of people feverishly moved dirt and sand for two weeks to build the levee, now only a couple workers remained to monitor it.

"They built that levee out of the right thing, the right materials," said Chuck Behr, Hamburg Bakery owner and a former city councilman. "There's no reason to think we are in jeopardy."

Most customers who popped in and out of Behr's bakery Saturday morning said they expected the levee to hold.

Floodwater continued to spread over Hamburg-area farmland. Interstate 29 was still closed in the area, and on one alternate route, Nebraska Highway 2, westbound motorists drove through about 3 inches of moving water in spots.

With peak releases planned until at least mid August and high flows expected until December, officials urged residents on Saturday not to let their guard down.

Mandan Mayor Tim Helbling told reporters he saw residents mowing their lawns and using weed-eater machines on their sandbags and dikes in a drive around Saturday.

"That is probably not a good idea folks ... because they will do a lot of damage," Helbling said Saturday.

"I know your yard needs to look pretty, but I think there are other priorities that should be in line first."

Saudi beheads Indonesian woman convicted of murder

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) – An Indonesian woman was beheaded by the sword on Saturday after being convicted of murdering a Saudi woman, the interior ministry said.

The woman named Roiaiti Beth Sabotti Sarona, according to a transliteration from Arabic, was found guilty of killing Saudi Khairiya bint Hamid Mijlid by striking her repeatedly on the head with a meat chopper and stabbing her in the neck, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

The ministry did not elaborate on the motives of the crime, nor it did disclose the relation between the two women. But Indonesian officials say that around 70 percent of the 1.2 million Indonesians working in Saudi Arabia are domestic staff.

The beheading in the western province of Mecca brings the number of executions in the ultra-conservative kingdom this year to 28, according to an AFP tally based on official and human rights group reports.

London-based watchdog Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia last week to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions carried out over the past six weeks.

It said at least 27 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia in 2011, "the same as the total number of people executed in the whole of 2010. Fifteen people were executed in May alone."

In 2009, the number of executions reached 67, compared to 102 in 2008.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

LulzSec hackers taunt with telephone hotline

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Lulz Security hacker group is flaunting its notoriety with a telephone hotline for people to call and suggest targets for cyber attacks.

"Our number literally has anywhere between five and 20 people ringing it every single second," members of the group said in a Twitter message posted on a LulzSec account late Wednesday morning.

"We can forward it anywhere in the world," they continued in a string of "tweets" that suggested they were using the flood of calls to jam phone lines of companies in telephone versions of Internet "denial of service" attacks.

Lulz has been in the spotlight after taking credit for cyberattacks on high-profile companies including Sony and Nintendo.

Videogame companies appear to be favored targets for the group, prompting some in the computer security industry to believe its members are young people up to antics rather than cyber crooks out for loot.

The hotline number spelled out "LULZSEC" and had an area code in the US state of Ohio.

A recorded greeting featured a man speaking with an exaggerated French accent explaining that "Pierre Dubois and Francois Deluxe" were unavailable because they were up to mischief on the Internet.

Setting up a telephone hotline was "kind of eccentric" given that the hackers could have easily set up an online forum asking for targets, according to Panda computer security firm labs technical director Luis Corrons.

"These guys are upsetting a lot of people," Corrons said. "They think they will never be caught, and that could be their biggest mistake."

LulzSec began taking requests by telephone a day ago on what it called "Titanic Takeover Tuesday."

It claimed to have marked the day with attacks on The Escapist videogame lifestyle website and a popular League of Legions online battle game.

LulzSec has claimed non-game targets including the US Senate, the Public Broadcasting System news organization, and an Infragard company that works with the FBI.

Sega attacked, hacker group offers to take revenge

BOSTON (Reuters) – Japan's Sega Corp joined the rapidly growing club of video game companies whose computer systems have been hacked by cyber criminals, the company said on Friday.

The news capped a week in which the Lulz Security group of hackers launched a cyber crime spree against other video game companies.

In an unexpected twist, Lulz responded to the news of the attack on Sega by offering to track down and punish the hackers who attacked the Japanese maker of video game software.

The drama surrounding the recent round of video game breaches paled compared to what PlayStation maker Sony Corp experienced following two high-profile attacks that surfaced in April. Those breaches led to the theft of account data for more than 100 million customers, making it the largest ever hacking of data outside the financial services industry.

They also exposed what turned out to be a large number of security holes in sites throughout the global Sony media empire. That led to a rash of attacks on Sony systems that undermined confidence in the company and made it the source of frequent jokes by security experts. Its security staff scrambled to repair vulnerabilities in its network as independent experts identified new problems via remote scans and disclosed them to Sony and the public.

Sega said that some personal information about an unspecified number of Sega Pass online network members had been compromised in the attack, according to a letter the company sent to customers on Friday that was published on the PlayStation LifeStyle.net website.

Customer email addresses and birthdates, which can be read in plain text were taken, as were passwords, which could not be read in plain text because they had been scrambled or encrypted using security software before being stored in the database.

Sega shut down the Pass network on Thursday, the day it learned of the breach, telling customers in a note on its website that it was "undergoing improvements." It was not immediately clear when it would go back online.

The video game developer is a division of Japan's Sega Sammy Holdings, which makes game software such as Sonic the Hedgehog as well as slot machines.

Sega was one of the biggest video game consoles makers in the 1990s, but pulled out of the market in 2001 in response to disappointing sales of its Dreamcast system, which had debuted in 1998 to widespread industry praise. Dreamcast lost ground to newer products developed by Sony and Nintendo.

It now focuses on developing video games for systems made by other companies.

LULZ GETS INVOLVED

While the FBI is likely to be called in to investigate the attack on Sega, as the bureau typically is in such cases, its agents may find themselves competing for clues with members of Lulz Security hacking group.

In its offer to assist Sega, the Tweet from Lulz hinted that its leaders might count themselves among a small but highly loyal group of gamers who still play on the aging Dreamcast console.

"Sega - contact us," Lulz said in its Tweet to the video game developer. "We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down."

Lulz offered to see that the cyber criminals are punished for attacking Sega shortly after ending its own crime spree that included attacks on several other video game companies.

The Lulz hackers, who publicize their attacks on their own website and via Twitter, said on Friday that they had stolen customer records of some 200,000 users of the online video game Brink. Officials at Xenia Media, the developer of Brink, could not be reached for comment.

Lulz last week also attacked several other industry players, saying it was working on behalf of disgruntled players who had ordered the attacks via telephone hotlines that Lulz set up in the United States and Europe to solicit such requests.

Tribalware.net and EVE from Innogames were among the victims of the Lulz campaign against video game makers. The hacking group also attacked servers that help run two other online games -- "League of Legends" and "Minecraft" -- and it hit the The Escapist website, which provides video game news.

Lulz had hacked into Nintendo in an attack that it disclosed on June 3, but the incident has not appeared to have serious consequences for the company. The hacking group published a data file over the Internet that it said contained details on the way Nintendo set up one of its web servers.

Such data could be valuable to other hackers planning future attacks on Nintendo because the data potentially could leave clues as to possible security weaknesses in the game maker's network.

Man U Vs Barca: Ferdinand backs sensational Hernandez to perform again

Rio Ferdinand has backed Javier Hernandez - labelled "the sensation of the season" by manager Sir Alex Ferguson - to rise to the occasion when Manchester United take on Barcelona in Saturday's Champions League final.

The 22-year-old Mexican has scored 20 goals in his first season at Old Trafford since making a bargain six million pound move from the Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara, and could start alongside Wayne Rooney at Wembley.

"He has been exceptional for a young player in his first season. He has shown great maturity and, if he plays, I expect him to handle it as professionally as he has done in all the other big games he has played in," the BBC quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

He added: "Chicarito has been a surprise package to most people, but he is extremely dedicated. I don't think anyone expected him to do as well as he has, but he has hit the ground running and been a real threat for us this season."

Ferdinand further said: "To score 20 goals in your first season as a young player in a new country is phenomenal but he deserves his success for the hard work he puts in on the training ground and with his dedication to the game."

Hernandez has also come in for praise from manager Alex Ferguson.

The man losing out, however, is Michael Owen, who has realised that Ferguson is spoiled for choices in selecting the side that will eventually do duty on May 28.

Alcohol-related hospital admissions increase in Wirral

Alcohol-related hospital admissions in Wirral continue to escalate as nationwide latest figures exceed one million admissions a year for the first time.

Statistics compiled by the NHS formation Centre for 2009-10 revealed 1,057,000 hospital visits in relation to alcohol – a 12% increase on the previous year and more than double the amount recorded in 2002-03.

Wirral has a reputation as one of the worst places in the country for hospital admissions caused through drink.

The number of Wirral people seeking hospital treatment for booze-related medical problems went up from 8,686 in 2008-09 to 8,707 in 2008-10.

Councillor Anne McArdle, Wirral Council’s new cabinet member for social care, said: “Clearly any rise in admissions is of concern in Wirral where there is a particular concern regarding young people and alcohol.

“We all know there is a close link between this rise in admissions and the cheap price and easy availability of alcohol, which we will continue to address with the national government.”

She continued: "In Wirral, our multi-agency approach has led to the rise being much smaller than was anticipated – proving that this approach to the issue does work well.

“I am very keen to continue this partnership approach and will be meeting with health colleagues during Alcohol Awareness Week – which runs from June 6 – to look at what more can be done to keep more people out of hospital by encouraging healthier lifestyles.”

Last September, shock revelations about problems stemming from cheap booze were put before Wirral licensing authority.

Members were told that imposing a minimum UK pricing strategy for alcohol of 50p per unit could prevent 3,400 deaths annually, 100,000 hospital admissions, 300,000 days off sick and 46,000 crimes.

In March, however, the council ruled against setting a minimum price for alcohol in the borough after being advised by then council leader Cllr Jeff Green to strike the right balance between tackling alcohol abuse without hitting responsible moderate drinkers.

The council was also informed that the government had proposed measures to prevent the heavy discounting of alcohol at booze outlets.

Figures released by the NHS Information Centre showed that 63% of hospital admissions were for men and that there were higher rates of admissions related to booze for older adults than their younger counterparts.

The report further revealed that alcohol dependency cost the NHS £2.41m in prescription items last year – up 1.4% on the amount spent in the previous year.

The highest call for prescriptions was in the North West and North East.

Microsoft's Windows Phone Updates Arriving for Samsung Devices

Microsoft is resuming Windows Phone updates for Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus smartphones, even as it prepares for its larger "Mango" update later in 2011.

Microsoft has resumed updates for Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus smartphones running its Windows Phone software.

“Today we restarted updating Omnia 7 phones,” Eric Hautala, general manager for Microsoft’s Customer Experience Engineering unit, wrote in a May 17 posting on The Windows Blog. “The restart is happening in phases. Go to the Zune software and manually check for an update.”

For those who didn’t receive an update May 17, “look again next Tuesday when we plan to deliver updates to additional Omnia 7 customers.” Those owners of a particular Focus variant will not receive their update, however, and Microsoft is offering no definitive arrival date.
Earlier this year, Microsoft experienced some turbulence in pushing its first updates to Windows Phone. A small February update, meant to pave the way for future updates, “bricked” or stalled a small subset of devices. The larger “NoDo” update, which introduced cut-and-paste functionality along with faster app loading and other features, also hit some delays.

Samsung smartphones in particular seemed to have trouble receiving and installing Microsoft’s updates, forcing the company to halt the push. Indeed, some of those troubles continue even as Microsoft resumes the updates.

“A small number of people who’ve already installed the March ‘copy and paste’ update on their Omnia 7 might have trouble installing 7392,” Hautala wrote, “but Samsung today published a new tool designed to fix this.” A link to that new Samsung tool is available via a support article posted on a Microsoft Webpage.

Even as Microsoft cleans up issues related to its first two updates, news has started to percolate through the blogosphere about the next Windows Phone upgrade, codenamed “Mango,” due for release later in 2011.

Mango includes productivity enhancements such as the ability to pin email folders to the smartphone’s start screen, search a server for email items no longer stored on the device, force emails to obey IT administrators’ policies, and threading email replies into a “conversation view.” Users will also have the capability to save and share Office documents via Office 365 and Windows Live Skydrive.

In addition to those tweaks aimed at businesses, Mango will introduce more consumer-centric features such as multitasking, Internet Explorer 9, and a turn-by-turn navigation feature with voice guidance.

New data from The Nielsen Company had 6 percent of consumers indicating they wanted a Windows Mobile/Windows Phone smartphone as their next device, compared with 31 percent for Android, 30 percent for Apple’s iOS and 11 percent for Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. Microsoft likely hopes that updates and new features to its mobile platform will draw in consumers and businesses who would otherwise go for those rival smartphones; but given the lack of definitive consumer-sales numbers, it remains to be seen how much of an impact Windows Phone is having in the marketplace.

Obama tells Israel: Go back to 1967 borders

President Barack Obama endorsed a major Palestinian demand today for the borders of its future state and prodded Israel to accept that it can never have a truly peaceful nation that is based on "permanent occupation." Obama's urging that a Palestinian state be based on 1967 borders — before the Six Day War in which Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza — was a significant shift in the US approach and seemed certain to anger Israel. Israel has said an endorsement of the 1967 borders would prejudge negotiations, and Obama took pains to show respect for Israel's views ahead of his meetings tomorrow with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The comments came in Obama's most comprehensive response to date to the uprisings sweeping the Arab world. Speaking at the State Department, he called for the first time for the leader of Syria to embrace democracy or move aside, though without specifically demanding his ouster.

As he addressed audiences abroad and at home, Obama sought to leave no doubt that the U.S. stands behind the protesters who have swelled from nation to nation across the Middle East and North Africa, while also trying to convince American viewers that US involvement in unstable countries halfway around the world is in their interest, too. Obama said the United States has a historic opportunity and the responsibility to support the rights of people clamoring for freedoms, and he called for "a new chapter in American diplomacy."

"We know that our own future is bound to this region by the forces of economics and security; history and faith," the president said. He hailed the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and declared that bin Laden's vision of destruction was fading even before US forces shot him dead. Obama said the "shouts of human dignity are being heard across the region."

The president noted that two leaders had stepped down — referring to Egypt and Tunisia — and said that "more may follow." He quoted civilian protesters who have pushed for change in Egypt, Libya, Syria and Yemen but noted that among those nations, only Egypt has seen the departure of a long-ruling autocratic leader. Obama said that while there will be setbacks accompanying progress in political transitions, the movements present a valuable opportunity for the US to show which side it is on. "We have a chance to show that America values the dignity of the street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of a dictator," he said, referring to the fruit vendor who killed himself in despair and sparked a chain of events that unleashed uprisings around the Arab world.

On the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the president cautioned that the recent power-sharing agreement between the mainstream Palestinian faction led by Mahmoud Abbas and the radical Hamas movement that rules Gaza "raises profound and legitimate" security questions for Israel. Netanyahu has refused to deal with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas.

"How can one negotiate with a party that has shown itself unwilling to recognize your right to exist?" Obama asked. "In the weeks and months to come, Palestinian leaders will have to provide a credible answer to that question." Obama also rejected a push by the Palestinians for UN recognition of a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in September. "Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state," Obama said. The president ignored many of the most divisive issues separating the two sides. He did not speak about the status of Jerusalem or the fate of Palestinian refugees. And, he did not discuss a way to resolve Israel's concerns about a Hamas role in a unified Palestinian government, telling the Palestinians that they would have to address the matter themselves.

On Syria, Obama said President Bashar Assad must lead his country to democracy or "get out of the way," his most direct warning to the leader of a nation embroiled in violence. Obama said the Syrian government "has chosen the path of murder and the mass arrests of its citizens." He praised the Syrian people for their courage in standing up to repression in a bloody crackdown that has killed hundreds.

Obama said that while each country in the region is unique, there are shared values in the push for political change that will define the U.S. approach. "Our message is simple: If you take the risks that reform entails, you will have the full support of the United States," he said. The speech was in some ways notable for what Obama did not mention. While critical of autocracy throughout the Mideast, he failed to mention at the region's largest, richest and arguably most repressive nation, US ally Saudi Arabia. Nor did he discuss Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally that has a peace deal with Israel. Also left out was the United Arab Emirates, the wealthy, pro-American collection of mini-states on the Gulf. And he gave little attention to Iran, where US attempts at outreach have gone nowhere. Obama announced economic incentives aimed at steering a region roiling in violence toward democratic change that lasts.

Among the elements of his approach:

* The canceling of roughly $1 billion in debt for Egypt. The intention is that money freed from that debt obligation would be swapped toward investments in priority sectors of the Egyptian economy, likely to focus on entrepreneurship and employment for younger people. Unemployment rates are soaring in Egypt and across the region.

* The guaranteeing of up to $1 billion in borrowing for Egypt through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a US government institution that mobilizes private capital.

* Promises by the U.S. to launch a new trade partnership in the Middle East and North Africa and to prod world financial institutions to help Egypt and Tunisia.

Hottest July day ever in England

A fountain near Tower Bridge provided a source of cooling water
Severn Trent Water said consumption in its area had risen by 200 million litres per day, the equivalent of 800,000 extra people.

The hot weather has affected public transport with trains on the West Coast Main Line, between London Euston and Lancaster, restricted to 90mph for safety reasons. Speed limits had already been enforced on some parts of the London Underground, where passengers were advised to carry bottled water. Visitors to the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire were banned from venturing off footpaths by officials fearing the hot weather could cause fires in dry woodland areas.

Sunstroke increase

It was the first time access to the moorland had been restricted since open access under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act was introduced in 2004. NHS Direct said it was dealing with between 2,000 and 2,500 extra calls per day, with many being people wanting advice on the heatwave.

It said less than 1% of the calls were from people with symptoms of sunstroke, but calls from people with those symptoms had risen from 42 on Sunday to 70 on Tuesday. Ambulance service bosses have urged drivers to stay with cars in traffic jams despite the heat. Fire risk signs have been posted in national parks and on moorland Officials in Essex said a crew had severe difficulties getting to an accident because hot motorists had abandoned their cars to find shade. Dozens of schools across England have closed or are sending pupils home early because of the soaring temperatures. But a 15-year-old girl at a school in Doncaster was told to go home to get her blazer after leaving it at home because of the heat.

BBC Midlands Today's weather team faced an unexpected problem on Wednesday - their graphics only featured temperatures as high as 32C and had to be remade with numbers up to 38. Temperatures are expected to fall slightly on Thursday with showers bringing relief to some eastern areas - but most of England will still be hot and sticky. The highest temperature ever recorded in England was 38.5C (101.3F) in Faversham, Kent, on 10 August 2003.

Wednesday was the hottest July day in England ever, with a temperature of 36.5C (97.3F) taken at Wisley, Surrey.  The temperature beat the previous record from July 1911 when temperatures reached 36C (96.8F) in Epsom, Surrey. Earlier on Wednesday the record had first been broken with a reading of 36.3C (97.3F) at Charlwood, also in Surrey, near Gatwick Airport. Zoos took special steps to keep animals cool and NHS Direct reported increased calls from people hit by sunstroke. Many schools across England were forced to close because of "unbearable" heat.  London's Heathrow Airport had seen the highest recorded temperatures on both Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday the thermometer there recorded its highest ever reading of 35C (95F).

As the heat rose Zoo keepers were giving animals treats to keep them cool.

Animals were given regular hosings down and sprayed with dirt, which acts as a barrier to the sun, while they were fed with specially made ice blocks containing fruit - or for lions, blood. The RSPCA said it received hundreds of calls reporting dogs left in cars and other hot places. Two dogs died in the heat - a golden retriever in a garden without shade in Oxfordshire and a whippet left in a car in Warwickshire. Hundreds of people in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire had no clean water early on Wednesday, after garden sprinklers left on during the night emptied small reservoirs faster than they could be refilled.

China Aiming Railway Project in Makassar

China-based railway company, Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co Ltd, is willing to work on the construction of railway and train cars in Sulawesi. Tangshan is ready to cover 80 percent of the development budget.

Tangshan Railway Vehicle Vice General Manager, Zhen Dawei, said the infrastructure development will include railways and train stations, including train cars.

"We'll take around 80 percent of budget while the government will take 20 percent other," he said today.

The project will aim at improving transportation lines in Sulawesi, and is planned to be worked on by three phases.

The first phase will cover the distance of 700 km starting from Makassar, Maros, Pangkep, Barru, Parepare, Sidrap, Luwu, Malili, and Sorowako.

The second phase of 400 km will include Parepare, Pinrang, Polman, Majene, Mamuju, and North Mamuju (West Sulawesi). The third phase of 900 km will cover North Mamuju, Palu (Central Sulawesi), Gorontalo, and Manado (North Sulawesi).

"The calculation has it that the project will cover the distance of almost 2,000 km and can be completed in 10 years," he said.

Makassar Mayor, Ilham Arief Siradjuddin, responded over the will of the Chinese government. According to him, Makassar, and Sulawesi in particular, is in need of railway system.

"The railway system will enable the trip from Makassar to Parepare to be covered in around thirty minutes to an hour," said Ilham.

New Double Track Railway to be Built Soon

Coordinating Minister for State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Mustafa Abubakar vowed double track railway linking Jakarta with Surabaya will be on construction prior to 2013.

"We'll be developing double track railway for Jakarta-Surabaya route before 2013," said Mustafa on Friday.

As reported, a consortium of SOEs are soon to work on Jakarta-Surabaya double track railway covering 780 kilometers of distance at Rp6.5 trillion of budget.

The consortium consists of PT Kereta Api (KAI), PT Jasa Marga Tbk (JSMR), and other SOEs. The estimated fund for the project is lower in amount than the subsidies prepared by the government worth Rp9 trillion.

Indonesia only have few double track railways, adding the Jakarta-Cirebon and Kutoarjo-Yogyakarta-Solo into the list.

Dirty energy behind internet and wireless communications growth: Greenpeace study

Despite some leadership by Yahoo!, Akamai, and Google, lack of transparency masks continued reliance on coal by Facebook and others to power the growth of cloud computing.

Greenpeace today released an international study that highlights the rapidly growing environmental footprint of the online world and offers an evaluation of both good and bad energy choices made by leading Information Technology (IT) companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple, Yahoo! and others.

“How Dirty is Your Data?” showcases the enormous amount of electricity required to power “the cloud” and finds that the information and communication technology sector (ICT), despite significant advances in energy efficient data center design, is both largely ignoring the importance of using renewable power as a top criterion for locating new infrastructure and is not transparent in disclosing its energy use.

From an Indian perspective the report highlights the reliance of the Indian telecommunication industry on diesel to power its exponential growth, inspite of existing cost-competitive renewable opportunities. Currently, the industry consumes over 2 billion liters of diesel at subsidised rates, emitting over 5.6 MtCO2e of carbon annually, which is 2% of country’s overall GHG emission. Considering that 40% of the over 300,000 existing mobile towers are located in rural areas, and significant expansions projected, a switch-over to renewable energy sources adds economic robustness and long-term profitability for Telecom companies.

“We expect the ICT sector to play a critical role in accelerating a shift to a low-carbon economy through the development of solutions and driving their operations with large-scale use of clean renewable energy, avoiding high carbon lock-ins.” said Greenpeace campaigner Abhishek Pratap. “But it is clear that the ICT and in particular the Telecom sector’s failure to address their growing carbon emissions hides a continued reliance on dirty diesel to power its current and future infrastructure. Consumers certainly would like to know that when they use mobiles or change their Facebook status, they are not contributing to toxic coal ash, global warming or future Fukishima’s.”

Greenpeace evaluated ten cloud companies on their transparency, infrastructure siting decisions, and mitigation strategies. Facebook, Apple, Twitter, Amazon, and others receive failing marks in one or more categories.

Key findings:

• Despite the fact that data centers, which house the explosion of virtual information, currently consume 1.5-2% of all global electricity and are growing at a rate of 12% per year, companies in the sector, as a whole, do not release information on their energy use and its associated global warming emissions. (2)

· Some companies have coal intensity greater than the US grid average. One of the most popular social media companies, Facebook, is among the most dependent on coal-powered electricity at 53.2%.

· Yahoo! and Google seem to understand the importance of a renewable energy supply. Yahoo! has sited near sources of renewable energy, and Google is directly purchasing clean power. Their models should be employed and improved upon by other cloud companies.

· Of the ten brands graded, Akamai, a global content distribution network, earned top of the class recognition for transparency; Yahoo! had the strongest infrastructure siting policy; IBM and Google demonstrated the best overall approach to reduce their current footprints.

· In India, where there is limited reliable grid electricity, there is a tremendous opportunity for telecom operators to show leadership by investing in renewable energy, but many are relying on heavily polluting diesel generators to fuel their growth.

“Green IT should not be a choice between energy efficiency and clean electricity - companies need to give equal attention to both for green data centers,” Greenpeace IT policy analyst Gary Cook said. “As Yahoo! and Google are demonstrating, forward thinking companies can help lead us towards energy security and safety by stating a preference for renewable power and supporting strong policies that move us to a low carbon economy.”
