Sega attacked, hacker group offers to take revenge

BOSTON (Reuters) – Japan's Sega Corp joined the rapidly growing club of video game companies whose computer systems have been hacked by cyber criminals, the company said on Friday.

The news capped a week in which the Lulz Security group of hackers launched a cyber crime spree against other video game companies.

In an unexpected twist, Lulz responded to the news of the attack on Sega by offering to track down and punish the hackers who attacked the Japanese maker of video game software.

The drama surrounding the recent round of video game breaches paled compared to what PlayStation maker Sony Corp experienced following two high-profile attacks that surfaced in April. Those breaches led to the theft of account data for more than 100 million customers, making it the largest ever hacking of data outside the financial services industry.

They also exposed what turned out to be a large number of security holes in sites throughout the global Sony media empire. That led to a rash of attacks on Sony systems that undermined confidence in the company and made it the source of frequent jokes by security experts. Its security staff scrambled to repair vulnerabilities in its network as independent experts identified new problems via remote scans and disclosed them to Sony and the public.

Sega said that some personal information about an unspecified number of Sega Pass online network members had been compromised in the attack, according to a letter the company sent to customers on Friday that was published on the PlayStation LifeStyle.net website.

Customer email addresses and birthdates, which can be read in plain text were taken, as were passwords, which could not be read in plain text because they had been scrambled or encrypted using security software before being stored in the database.

Sega shut down the Pass network on Thursday, the day it learned of the breach, telling customers in a note on its website that it was "undergoing improvements." It was not immediately clear when it would go back online.

The video game developer is a division of Japan's Sega Sammy Holdings, which makes game software such as Sonic the Hedgehog as well as slot machines.

Sega was one of the biggest video game consoles makers in the 1990s, but pulled out of the market in 2001 in response to disappointing sales of its Dreamcast system, which had debuted in 1998 to widespread industry praise. Dreamcast lost ground to newer products developed by Sony and Nintendo.

It now focuses on developing video games for systems made by other companies.

LULZ GETS INVOLVED

While the FBI is likely to be called in to investigate the attack on Sega, as the bureau typically is in such cases, its agents may find themselves competing for clues with members of Lulz Security hacking group.

In its offer to assist Sega, the Tweet from Lulz hinted that its leaders might count themselves among a small but highly loyal group of gamers who still play on the aging Dreamcast console.

"Sega - contact us," Lulz said in its Tweet to the video game developer. "We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down."

Lulz offered to see that the cyber criminals are punished for attacking Sega shortly after ending its own crime spree that included attacks on several other video game companies.

The Lulz hackers, who publicize their attacks on their own website and via Twitter, said on Friday that they had stolen customer records of some 200,000 users of the online video game Brink. Officials at Xenia Media, the developer of Brink, could not be reached for comment.

Lulz last week also attacked several other industry players, saying it was working on behalf of disgruntled players who had ordered the attacks via telephone hotlines that Lulz set up in the United States and Europe to solicit such requests.

Tribalware.net and EVE from Innogames were among the victims of the Lulz campaign against video game makers. The hacking group also attacked servers that help run two other online games -- "League of Legends" and "Minecraft" -- and it hit the The Escapist website, which provides video game news.

Lulz had hacked into Nintendo in an attack that it disclosed on June 3, but the incident has not appeared to have serious consequences for the company. The hacking group published a data file over the Internet that it said contained details on the way Nintendo set up one of its web servers.

Such data could be valuable to other hackers planning future attacks on Nintendo because the data potentially could leave clues as to possible security weaknesses in the game maker's network.

Man U Vs Barca: Ferdinand backs sensational Hernandez to perform again

Rio Ferdinand has backed Javier Hernandez - labelled "the sensation of the season" by manager Sir Alex Ferguson - to rise to the occasion when Manchester United take on Barcelona in Saturday's Champions League final.

The 22-year-old Mexican has scored 20 goals in his first season at Old Trafford since making a bargain six million pound move from the Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara, and could start alongside Wayne Rooney at Wembley.

"He has been exceptional for a young player in his first season. He has shown great maturity and, if he plays, I expect him to handle it as professionally as he has done in all the other big games he has played in," the BBC quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

He added: "Chicarito has been a surprise package to most people, but he is extremely dedicated. I don't think anyone expected him to do as well as he has, but he has hit the ground running and been a real threat for us this season."

Ferdinand further said: "To score 20 goals in your first season as a young player in a new country is phenomenal but he deserves his success for the hard work he puts in on the training ground and with his dedication to the game."

Hernandez has also come in for praise from manager Alex Ferguson.

The man losing out, however, is Michael Owen, who has realised that Ferguson is spoiled for choices in selecting the side that will eventually do duty on May 28.

Obama tells Israel: Go back to 1967 borders

President Barack Obama endorsed a major Palestinian demand today for the borders of its future state and prodded Israel to accept that it can never have a truly peaceful nation that is based on "permanent occupation." Obama's urging that a Palestinian state be based on 1967 borders — before the Six Day War in which Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza — was a significant shift in the US approach and seemed certain to anger Israel. Israel has said an endorsement of the 1967 borders would prejudge negotiations, and Obama took pains to show respect for Israel's views ahead of his meetings tomorrow with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The comments came in Obama's most comprehensive response to date to the uprisings sweeping the Arab world. Speaking at the State Department, he called for the first time for the leader of Syria to embrace democracy or move aside, though without specifically demanding his ouster.

As he addressed audiences abroad and at home, Obama sought to leave no doubt that the U.S. stands behind the protesters who have swelled from nation to nation across the Middle East and North Africa, while also trying to convince American viewers that US involvement in unstable countries halfway around the world is in their interest, too. Obama said the United States has a historic opportunity and the responsibility to support the rights of people clamoring for freedoms, and he called for "a new chapter in American diplomacy."

"We know that our own future is bound to this region by the forces of economics and security; history and faith," the president said. He hailed the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and declared that bin Laden's vision of destruction was fading even before US forces shot him dead. Obama said the "shouts of human dignity are being heard across the region."

The president noted that two leaders had stepped down — referring to Egypt and Tunisia — and said that "more may follow." He quoted civilian protesters who have pushed for change in Egypt, Libya, Syria and Yemen but noted that among those nations, only Egypt has seen the departure of a long-ruling autocratic leader. Obama said that while there will be setbacks accompanying progress in political transitions, the movements present a valuable opportunity for the US to show which side it is on. "We have a chance to show that America values the dignity of the street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of a dictator," he said, referring to the fruit vendor who killed himself in despair and sparked a chain of events that unleashed uprisings around the Arab world.

On the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the president cautioned that the recent power-sharing agreement between the mainstream Palestinian faction led by Mahmoud Abbas and the radical Hamas movement that rules Gaza "raises profound and legitimate" security questions for Israel. Netanyahu has refused to deal with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas.

"How can one negotiate with a party that has shown itself unwilling to recognize your right to exist?" Obama asked. "In the weeks and months to come, Palestinian leaders will have to provide a credible answer to that question." Obama also rejected a push by the Palestinians for UN recognition of a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in September. "Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state," Obama said. The president ignored many of the most divisive issues separating the two sides. He did not speak about the status of Jerusalem or the fate of Palestinian refugees. And, he did not discuss a way to resolve Israel's concerns about a Hamas role in a unified Palestinian government, telling the Palestinians that they would have to address the matter themselves.

On Syria, Obama said President Bashar Assad must lead his country to democracy or "get out of the way," his most direct warning to the leader of a nation embroiled in violence. Obama said the Syrian government "has chosen the path of murder and the mass arrests of its citizens." He praised the Syrian people for their courage in standing up to repression in a bloody crackdown that has killed hundreds.

Obama said that while each country in the region is unique, there are shared values in the push for political change that will define the U.S. approach. "Our message is simple: If you take the risks that reform entails, you will have the full support of the United States," he said. The speech was in some ways notable for what Obama did not mention. While critical of autocracy throughout the Mideast, he failed to mention at the region's largest, richest and arguably most repressive nation, US ally Saudi Arabia. Nor did he discuss Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally that has a peace deal with Israel. Also left out was the United Arab Emirates, the wealthy, pro-American collection of mini-states on the Gulf. And he gave little attention to Iran, where US attempts at outreach have gone nowhere. Obama announced economic incentives aimed at steering a region roiling in violence toward democratic change that lasts.

Among the elements of his approach:

* The canceling of roughly $1 billion in debt for Egypt. The intention is that money freed from that debt obligation would be swapped toward investments in priority sectors of the Egyptian economy, likely to focus on entrepreneurship and employment for younger people. Unemployment rates are soaring in Egypt and across the region.

* The guaranteeing of up to $1 billion in borrowing for Egypt through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a US government institution that mobilizes private capital.

* Promises by the U.S. to launch a new trade partnership in the Middle East and North Africa and to prod world financial institutions to help Egypt and Tunisia.

Eminem Talks About His Transition To Acting On 'RapFix Live'

Eminem's transition from the studio to the silver screen was a successful one. His 2002 film "8 Mile" was critically acclaimed and took home some MTV Movie Awards. But for Marshall, going from rapper to actor wasn't as easy. In fact, he said that some initial advice he had gotten from Ice Cube gave him a false sense of confidence.

"I think Ice Cube said this one time; I think I heard him say this one time," Em told Sway during their "RapFix Live" interview, which will stream on MTV.com on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. "If you can rap, if you can perform to the camera for singing and videos, it should be a pretty, fairly natural transition. "I felt like having heard him say that was like, 'Oh, this may be fairly easy' — and it wasn't."

For Slim Shady, that wasn't the case. "It's a whole different thing, because you may be used to performing to the camera, but it's a whole different ball game when the music is off and you have lines that you need to say.

"It takes a minute to get used to."

Though there is no official word on when Eminem will return to the big screen in a starring role, the rapper has partnered up with fellow Detroit MC Royce Da 5'9" for their upcoming Bad Meets Evil EP, Hell: The Sequel.

Settlers feel avenged, say God ‘punishing’ the PM

As father of the settler movement, Ariel Sharon encouraged tens of thousands of Jews to move into the remote hilltop outposts and small towns that the government built for them. Sharon saw the settlements as vital to the security of the Jewish state. Yet many settlers believe the Prime Minister betrayed their cause when he pulled 8,500 Israelis from the Gaza Strip last year after a 38-year occupation, and today they watch his failing health with a mixture of anticipation and glee.

These settlers now sense a new opening if the Prime Minister’s programme of ceding chunks of territory to the Palestinians stalls. ‘‘The jarring fact is that he was hit from above,’’ said Avraham Hertzlick, a Brooklyn-born shepherd who has lived in this remote settlement for seven years. ‘‘He caused such tremendous pain to thousands of Jews, pain beyond measure. . . . Without a doubt, this was God’s punishment.’’

Sharon’s decision to abandon Gaza was a bow to demographic realities, a historic compromise acknowledging that the dream of a greater Israel was unrealistic. He turned his back on part of his core support, the right-wing settlers’ movement, while giving new life to Israel’s political centre.

As Sharon withdrew from Gaza, his government continued rapid construction in the West Bank, planned thousands of new housing units in settlements and proceeded with the building of a 450-mile concrete-and-metal wall to divide Palestinians and Israelis. The projects have allowed Israel to consolidate its grip on Jerusalem, a city Israelis and Palestinians claim as their capital.

It is not clear what steps Sharon planned next. In broad strokes, he spoke of a partial withdrawal from the West Bank, but at the same time he favored annexing four large settlement blocs and parts of east Jerusalem. He has never specified how much land he would cede, although the path of the wall offers the best hints: As planned, it leaves about 50,000 settlers on the Palestinian side who would presumably have to move. Whatever Sharon’s plans may have been, the prospects for a West Bank withdrawal now seem dimmer. No other politician in the running to replace him is considered sufficiently formidable to execute a disengagement plan. For West Bank settlers, any further pullback would be seen as another betrayal, and many feel like they’ve gotten a reprieve with the all-but-certain removal of Sharon from Israeli politics.

Lady Gaga stole the Grammy limelight on Sunday by arriving encased in a giant egg, and crawling out of it to perform her new single "Born This Way".

Gaga, 24, declared in a Twitter message that she was "in incubation" for her live appearance. Aides said she had spent three hours crouched inside the egg with an oxygen mask ahead of her arrival.

Borne aloft by attendants dressed in scanty gold-colored garb, the egg was the latest in a series of stunts by the performance artist and singer. In September, she wore a headline-grabbing dress made entirely of raw meat that she wore to the MTV Music Video Awards.

Onstage on Sunday, she crawled out of the egg dressed in yellow and sporting what appeared to be pointed shoulder implants.

Away from the Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles, the singer made headlines by saying in a pre-recorded TV interview that she uses marijuana and whiskey to help write her songs.

"(I) drink a lot of whiskey and I smoke weed when I write. And I don't do it a lot because it's not good for my voice," the singer told TV news show "60 Minutes".

"I don't want to encourage kids to do drugs....And I don't lie. I'm not a liar. I built good will with my fans. They know who I am. And I'm just like them in so many ways," she added.

Halfway through the Grammy ceremony, Gaga had won three of the six awards she had been nominated for -- one for her album "The Fame Monster" and two for her song "Bad Romance."

"I had this dream when I was really young that I could be whoever I wanted to be," she said in her acceptance speech.

The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, told "60 Minutes" there was always a point to her outrageous outfits.

"There's nothing that I've ever put on my body that I didn't understand where it came from, the reference of it, who inspired it. There's always some sort of a story or a concept that I'm telling," she said.

Glee Takes On Teen Insecurity and Plastic Surgery With Help of Lady Gaga

On last night's episode of Glee, the club takes on physical insecurities, a battle most high schoolers face. When Rachel breaks her nose, her doctor suggests she gets a nose job, causing her to consider plastic surgery to fix her so-called flaw.
Just last week, we debated the value of young people getting plastic surgery to diminish insecurity and stop bullying, a practice making headlines. Many of you said it's not, because sticking it out helps you learn to love what makes you unique, hopefully with the support of friends and family. With the help of Lady Gaga's song "Born This Way" the Glee Club comes to the same conclusion. At the end of the episode, they perform the song wearing shirts plastered with the word or phrase describing the feature they're most self-conscious about. Mr. Schue's shirt reads "Butt Chin." Kurt's notes he "Likes Boys" and Mercedes touts the fact she has "No Weave."

Are Unmarried Pregnant Women Still Stigmatized?

When a very pregnant Kate Hudson announced her engagement on the Today show, she was very nonchalant about it, saying: "I felt the announcing thing was just so silly . . . I was just waiting for someone to notice!" While Kate seems like a laid-back person, and this is, after all, her second marriage, I couldn't help but think that she's playing the engagement down because she's pregnant. You'd think that with as far as we've come with being open about sexuality (does anyone still question if coupled-up celebs are having sex?) that having kids without being married would be a nonissue. But even Natalie Portman didn't announce the baby before the ring, and would they have been engaged that early in their relationship if she hadn't been pregnant?
This got me wondering if the responsibility of having a baby together is just a catalyst for speeding up a marriage that would have happened eventually, or if women still feel pressured to be in a committed relationship — i.e. married or engaged — before having children. Do you think society still looks down on unmarried pregnant women?

Glee-Ful Highlights From Episode "Born This Way"

It's almost time for prom on Glee, but first up, the highly anticipated 90-minute Lady Gaga-inspired "Born This Way" episode! Gaga's music only provided one of the night's songs, though her mantra ran through the episode. It's all about self-acceptance and surprisingly, it's not even Sue Sylvester trying to ruin the glee club's self-esteem this time. Rachel Berry wants a nose job. Plus someone's got a secret — it's Quinn, again — and who doesn't love a mall flash mob?

Emma is in denial about her OCD and with Will's gentle urging, she may be finally ready to get some help. The race is on for prom king and queen and it turns out everyone is in the race — Quinn, Santana, and Lauren all want it. And the moment Glee fans have been waiting for with Kurt, well since the kiss, is here. To break it all down just read more.

• Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. The glee club's star singer who constantly wavers between overconfident and insecure spent this week on the latter side. After Finn busts her nose during "Booty Camp" dance training, Rachel's ridiculous doctor suggests she get a nose job. While at first Rachel pretends she's doing it partially because it may improve her voice, it's obvious that it would be for vanity's sake. Rachel focuses on Quinn's delicate nose as her dream schnoz, even bringing Quinn to the doctor's office so he can mock up what she may look like after the surgery. One of my favorite numbers of the episode was Quinn and Rachels "Unpretty"/"I Feel Pretty" mashup. The whole glee club tells Rachel she shouldn't change what she looks like, even Finn who opens up and calls her beautiful, much to Quinn's quiet dismay. In the end, it's Kurt and Barbra Streisand who convince Rachel to embrace herself for who she is, but more on Babs later.
• Mr. Schue wants to help the club embrace their flaws and he brings in Emma to help make t-shirts for their big "Born This Way" performance. It's eye-opening, however, when Emma claims that the thing that causes her the most shame is being a ginger. Will and Emma have a couple conversations on the topic and every time, Emma insists that she was not "born this way" — get it? When she realizes that perhaps it's been an issue she's always had, Emma finally goes to see a psychiatrist about her situation. By the end of the episode, Emma's shirt reads "OCD" and she and Will share a tender moment.
• Quinn resists the love thyself lesson and insists that prom queens should be aspirational not relatable when Lauren announces she's also running. Turns out, Quinn's got a hidden past and Lauren, whose father was roommates with G. Gordon Liddy, has done some sleuthing. Quinn apparently lied about where she went to middle school so no one had ever seen the yearbook photos that revealed that she was about 70 lbs. heavier and had a nose job of her very own before transferring to high school. It's a little odd that no one has figured this out before. Lauren plasters the school with the picture of younger Quinn with her former nickname, "Lucy Caboosey," but the plan backfires and only makes Miss Fabray even more popular. Finn also has a sweet moment saying it's his favorite photo of his girlfriend. Otherwise, the two seem pretty blissful, though we wonder what will happen if they don't win prom king and queen after all?
• Santana is in full on plotting mode to get in the prom running as well, and she figures that getting Kurt to come back will help get her some votes. She deduces that bully David Karofsky may be hiding something about his sexuality as well, so she confronts him and blackmails him to pretend to be her boyfriend and make a public apology about the Kurt incident. Of course, Kurt sees right through the plan but uses it to his advantage making Dave lead an anti-bullying campaign. Kurt's return to the glee club is in the works, though not without a proper send off from The Warblers. Blaine publicly serenades Kurt with Keane, though of course the real drama lies with Kurt's big welcome home number. He belts out Barbra Streisand's "As If We'd Never Said Goodbye" in a very (perhaps overly?) emotional glee club reunion.
• Other highlights include Finn trying to learn to dance from Mike Chang, Tina declaring that she's going to become an "Asian sex symbol," Brittany's "Lebanese" t-shirt for Santana, and of course the "Barbra Streisand" (the song is by Duck Sauce) mall flash mob.
